The 2021 squad is derived from the U.S. B, C, D teams, and the U.S. Ski & Snowboard National Development Group, as well as top U.S. Ski & Snowboard club program athletes from across the nation. Headlining this year’s team are 2019 Junior Worlds’ silver medalists and FIS Ski World Cup mainstays, Ben Ritchie and AJ Hurt. Due to COVID, quotas have been halved from a normal year, according to the tea,

World Alpine Skiing

Though 2020 World Juniors at Narvik, Norway, were cut short due to the coronavirus outbreak, Keely Cashman led the way with three top-10 results, including bronze in the alpine combined. Hurt finished in sixth just behind Cashman in the super-G at worlds and has skied consistently strong on the World Cup, scoring points across four disciplines during the 2020-21 season (parallel, slalom, giant slalom, and super-G). Additionally, Nicola Rountree-Williams was the second-fastest U18 last year in the giant slalom, and Bradshaw Underhill had a top-10 super-G result, in ninth.

“We are sending a strong team to the World Junior Championships this year, with multiple medal contenders and a goal of being on the podium in the overall Hodler Cup team competition,” said Alpine Development Director Chip Knight. “Many of our athletes have been racing at the Europa Cup and World Cup levels in recent months, so they are well prepared to compete with their international peers. We are looking forward to a great event.”

The 2021 Junior Worlds will not include downhill, alpine combined, and team events but will feature men and women’s super-G, giant slalom, and slalom. Live timing will be provided by FIS.

2021 World Alpine Skiing Championships TV, live stream

Every event of the world Alpine skiing championships airs live between NBCSN and Olympic Channel and streams live on Peacock Premium.

Worlds, held in odd years, run from Feb. 8-21 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, host of Alpine skiing at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Check out the live stream of the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships

Mikaela Shiffrin is again the headliner, planning to race four individual events at worlds for the first time. She’s set for the combined (Feb. 8), super-G (Feb. 9), giant slalom (Feb. 18) and slalom (Feb. 20) and a medal contender in every one.

Shiffrin is the Olympic silver medalist in the combined, reigning world champion in the super-G, reigning Olympic champion in the giant slalom and won the last four world titles in the slalom.

But the last year brought the biggest challenge of her career. Shiffrin went 300 days between races following the Feb. 2 death of her father. She has raced strictly giant slalom and slalom this season and recently trained super-G for the first time in one year. (Super-G and slalom make up the combined.)

Shiffrin is ranked third in the world this season in slalom and fifth in GS, but has a victory in each discipline.

The U.S. also has a downhill medal favorite in Breezy Johnson, the 25-year-old who fought back from significant leg injuries in 2017, 2018 and 2019 to make her first four World Cup podiums this season. Johnson, looking to succeed the retired Lindsey Vonn, is the highest-ranked downhiller entered at worlds after Olympic champion Sofia Goggia was knocked out by a knee injury.

The U.S. men will likely be without their top two skiers over the last two seasons — Ryan Cochran-Siegle (doubtful with a broken neck) and Tommy Ford (season-ending crash in January). They still have Ted Ligety, a two-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion, the last title coming in 2015, expected to ski in his last worlds.

The men’s favorites start with Frenchman Alexis Pinturault, the overall and GS World Cup leader and defending champion in the combined. Swiss and Austrians are the top-ranked men in downhill (Beat Feuz and Matthias Mayer), super-G (Vincent Kriechmayr and Mauro Caviezel) and slalom (Marco Schwarz and Ramon Zenhausern).

FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships 2021 confirmed in Bansko (BUL)

The Organising Committee of the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships 2021, Bansko (BUL) have confirmed the event, taking place from the 1st to 10th of March, 2021. The decision is based on the current local COVID-19situation and the imposed restrictions form health authorities as per 30.11.2020.

In this special situation, the programme will be adapted to include three races per gender and a separation of the flows between men’s and women’s teams and the teams arriving and leaving in separate waves. Also, the number of participants is reduced. The Junior World Championships will take place without any side events, including opening, closing, awarding. bib draw in public areas  and without spectators during the races.

„Although this very challenging global and local situation we really hope, that we will be able to deliver high class events with positive attitude and successful outcome, which will add value for our sports and will bring on the stage a new generation of promising young talents, said Georgi Bobev, Vice President of the Bulgarian Ski Association.

“We are very pleased to receive the confirmation for Bansko 2021. This event is the most important of each winter for our junior competitors and coaches. It keeps the motivation high for the future”, Ken Read, Chairman of the FIS Sub-Committee for Alpine Youth & Children’s Questions added.

Canada pulls out of world juniors

Alpine Canada announced today it will not send Canadian skiers to the 2021 FIS junior world alpine junior championships in both alpine and ski cross, scheduled for Bulgaria and Russia in early March.

Citing increased travel restrictions in Canada and abroad relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alpine Canada stated it was a difficult decision.

We were fully prepared to send teams ready to compete for the podium,” said Therese Brisson, president and CEO. “[But] unfortunately, new travel restrictions and quarantine measures, logistics for the events, and limited training options made it too unpredictable to have athletes participate and compete at their best.”

Alpine Canada also stated it is shifting the priorities for domestic racing and training for the balance of the season.

“We are consolidating our efforts around a domestic spring training, head-to-head racing and selection camps in April to kick off our preparation for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing and the next world junior alpine championships in March 2022 at Panorama, B.C.”

Phil McNichol, the high performance alpine director, is encouraging athletes “to focus on gaining quality training with their teams and to participate in national competitions as they present themselves in the coming months.”

World Pro Ski Tour welcomes Alpine Bank Junior Challenge at Steamboat

The World Pro Ski Tour (WPST) will host its third annual junior race alongside co-host and title sponsor, Alpine Bank, at the City of Steamboat Springs’ Howelsen Hill on Feb. 8, 2021. The race will feature WPST pro racers mentoring Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes, who will compete in a unique, mixed age-group format.

As a part of an ongoing effort to engage youth athletes in the dual format, the WPST has again joined forces with Alpine Bank to give young athletes an experience of a lifetime: the opportunity to race and be coached along by Olympians, World Champions, NCAA All-Americans and more. The 2021 junior racers will compete for the chance to be champions on and off the snow, an important value of the Winter Sports Club. The winning youth team will be presented a check from Alpine Bank, which will pay for unique vouchers for local Routt County youth to go skiing with their families at Howelsen Hill. The voucher is good for a free lift ticket and ski rental at Ski & Bike Kare, making the program, “Kids Race for Kids.”

“Alpine Bank, since its inception in Steamboat in 1999, has believed in supporting this community,” says Betsy Wood, Director of Community Outreach at Alpine Bank. “We focus on inclusive youth programming; every child that lives in Routt County – no matter their financial situation – deserves to experience the thrill of skiing. The philanthropic aspect of this program is a perfect way to enable kids to give back and teaches them how good it feels to be a champion off the snow.”

The youth race will be held at Howelsen Hill at 4:40pm, before the WPST Moose Barrows’ Trophy Race begins at 7 p.m. No spectators will be allowed onsite, but all action will be live-streamed on FacebookLive. The Winter Sports Club athletes also have the opportunity to interview their favorite WPST racers online for an episode of WPST Race Brakes, found on Facebook and Instagram, this week.

“We love any opportunity to foster young athletes,” says Jon Franklin, CEO of the WPST. “Alpine Bank has been a long-standing partner and this year with the introduction of ‘Kids Race for Kids,’ the program really has it all; WPST athletes mentoring youth racers, giving back to the community and helping get kids on snow for the first time.”
